À la fois réflexion sur la notion de liberté académique et enquête sur les menaces qui la visent, l'ouvrage examine, d'une part, la signification de cette notion, consubstantielle à l'idée d'université moderne, et d'autre part, deux évènements historiques ? le maccarthysme aux États-Unis et Mai 68 en France - au cours desquels la liberté académique fut malmenée.
